What is the Grandpals program?
GrandPals is an intergenerational program that brings older adults (55+) from the community and elementary school students (grade 5) together to build relationships through storytelling, conversation, and shared reflection.
The GrandPals program typically runs for eight to ten weeks. Each GrandPal is paired with a small group of students for weekly in-class conversations. Over time, students learn about their GrandPal’s life through themes like home, family, learning, work, and travel. The program culminates in students writing and illustrating a story from their GrandPal’s life — a tribute and a gift of gratitude.
Arts and Aging is the first affiliate organization in Atlantic Canada to participate in the national program.
GrandPals, supported by the Centre for Studies and Aging and Health at Providence Care.

What are the benefits of this program?
Students develop empathy, an understanding of aging, and tools for communication. Some studies indicate that intergenerational learning opportunities can even improve school attendance and scores for students!
GrandPals enjoy affirmed purpose and value in their unique identities and stories while also learning from and connecting with a younger generation they might not otherwise have a chance to meet.
