Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are essential for bringing our arts-based programs and events into reality. There are several ways to participate in the Arts and Aging Network; whether you are an advocate for the arts, enjoy being around seniors, or just want to contribute to your community, we have opportunities available for people of every age and experience level. You can volunteer to help at a single event, or you can take on an ongoing position such as a GrandPal, a Bus Trip Companion, an Artist Facilitator, or a Program Assistant. We encourage anyone interested in becoming a Facilitator or Program Assistant to contact us to learn more about completing the Dementia Sensitivity and Engagement Training and learning how to apply the Arts and Aging Approach.

Sunshine Singers

The Sunshine Singers are an audition only music group that bring joy, connection, and emotional well-being to seniors in care homes through interactive performances. Artists engage residents with lively music and meaningful social interaction in both group settings and optional room-to-room visits for isolated individuals.

Volunteers with the Sunshine Singers accompany the performers during each visit, providing valuable support throughout the program. They assist with setup, engage with residents, and help create an energetic, welcoming atmosphere that encourages participation and meaningful interaction. Their presence ensures that each resident feels valued, included, and appreciated, contributing to a positive and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Youth Sunshine Singers

The Youth Sunshine Singers is an volunteer program that brings joy, connection, and meaningful social engagement to seniors through music. Auditioned performers ages 12–17 visit community and long-term care settings, delivering interactive, dementia-inclusive performances that encourage participation rather than predominantly visual entertainment. Through group and one-on-one visits, the program creates uplifting experiences for residents while fostering empathy, leadership, and intergenerational connections for its young performers.

The Old School Bus

The Old School Bus is a retrofitted mobile programming space that brings people together through creative, interactive activities. Participants of all ages can enjoy art, music, games, and self-directed activities in an accessible, welcoming environment. Programs can be customized to meet the unique needs of each community, with activities offered both onboard and outdoors, weather permitting.

Volunteers with the Old School Bus support Arts and Aging staff during both public and private community visits. They assist with setting up arts and crafts activities, engaging with participants, providing general program support, and helping with cleanup at the end of each visit. Their contributions help ensure programs run smoothly while enhancing community participation and creating a welcoming, engaging experience for all attendees.

GrandPals

GrandPals is an intergenerational program that connects adult volunteers (55+) with Grade 5 students through weekly conversations and storytelling. Over the course of the program, students build meaningful relationships with their GrandPal and celebrate their life experiences by creating and illustrating a personal story. The program fosters connection, mutual learning, and appreciation across generations.

Volunteers of all ages support the GrandPals program during school visits by assisting with the overall flow of activities and providing general classroom support. They help facilitate meaningful interactions between GrandPals and students, assist with program needs as they arise, and contribute to a positive and engaging learning environment.

Pen Pals

The Pen Pal Program is an intergenerational letter-writing initiative that connects Grade 6 students with residents of long-term care and personal care homes. Over several months, participants exchange guided letters that encourage conversation, storytelling, and meaningful connections. The program promotes relationships across generations while expanding opportunities for engagement in schools and care communities.

Volunteers with the Pen Pal Program provide support in schools and long-term care or personal care homes by assisting students and residents with writing their letters. They help facilitate meaningful communication, encourage participation, and ensure all participants are able to engage fully in the program.

Creative Series

The Arts and Aging Creative Series offers inclusive, artist-led creative programs for older adults, including those living with dementia. The program encourages creative expression, social connection, and personal growth in a supportive environment. Each series concludes with an optional opportunity for participants to share their work with family, caregivers, and the community.

Volunteers with the Creative Series provide valuable support to facilitators and participants throughout the program. They assist with program activities, help create a welcoming and inclusive environment, and offer support wherever needed to ensure each session runs smoothly.
